16.10.08 2008: a sticky wicket
The nights are drawing in, the temperatures plummeting and the leaves falling: a sure sign that the close season is upon us. 2008 has been a demanding year. Although we managed to complete our league programme, the manner in which we did was below expectation, with just one win out of eight. Quality was not our problem, quantity was. Far too many games were lost because we were simply unable to field a full side. The lack of numbers also meant that several friendlies had to be called off. Membership and commitment are in a constant state of flux at our club. Many players come and go because of changing circumstances in their employment or personal lives. Whereas two teams were possible in the 2004-2006 period, in 2008 it was hard to muster even eleven players. 2009 promises to be challenging too, but the hope is that we will turn the corner next season. We have great facilities, a small but friendly membership and we offer anyone who has an active interest in the game ample opportunity to play, whether on a regular basis or an occasional one. If you are interested, just send an email to info@cricketheerlen.com
Stop press: Indoor cricket will start up in January!
23.05.08 Steady progress on fifth anniversary

Despite 5 defeats on the bounce, performances of Heerlen Cricket Club nevertheless show an upward trend. A three-wicket defeat at the hands of Arcadians Ghent last Sunday compared favourably with the thumping 200-run debacle on the opening day of the season. Our in-house stats guru has analysed our results thus far and, by way extrapolation, predictions show that we will have at least two innings-victories under our belt by the end of the season. (It's a pity no one has told him yet that we only play single innings matches). Another important milestone is reached this current Sunday when our elusive chairman reaches the age of 42. Better, Heerlen Cricket Club reaches a youthful 5 years of age. We can't help thinking our fortunes will take a turn for the better as we take on Gent CC in a friendly game at Kaldeborn to mark the occasion.
30.03.08 Full steam ahead
Readers may be slightly perplexed about the lack of communication on this site over the last few months. The truth is we have been away. More specifically in Belgium. But you would be mistaken for thinking we took a wrong turning on our way to Antwerp and got stuck in Affligem or Hoegaarden on a protracted brewery tour. Wishful thinking on our part maybe... 2007 marked our first season in the Belgian league. It was yet another successful year and ended in promotion to the 3rd division. The 2008 season is now almost upon us. Our first ever game was played on 26 May 2003, so this will be a special anniversary season! Once again we have a full schedule of league and friendly fixtures as well as many other activities this summer. As is the tradition, the first practice takes place on the first Thursday of the official summer-time, which this year will be on Thursday 3rd April and held on the cricket field at Kaldeborn in Heerlen. For directions see the information pages. In April, practice sessions start at 17.30 (for those that can make it that early) to take advantage of the light.
03.05.07 Heerlen ready to do battle in Belgium
Ahead of this Saturday's inaugural league match in the Belgian league, the Kaldeborn ground was this week given a facelift by the council. On Wednesday, the wicket was recompacted (including the removal of molehills) and the artificial turf relaid by the Council. At Thursday's training, the sightscreens were also put in place. At least in terms of facilities we are now ready to take on the rest of Belgium. Let's just hope our cricketers are up to it as well. A big thanks go to the Council workers for their willing cooperation. The home match versus Mechelen CC starts at 12.30 this coming Saturday, 5 May.

The home match coincides with a cricket clinic which is being held at the Volkshochschule in Aachen. After an explanation of the game at the school in Aachen, participants will then be given the chance and to experience cricket first-hand at Kaldeborn.
18.04.07 Runs galore at sundrenched Kaldeborn
Last Sunday's curtain raiser at Kaldeborn was ushered in by wall-to-wall sunshine and temperatures in the high twenties, unprecedented for this early stage of the season. The previously announced Twenty20 game was rescheduled at the last minute into a 25-over game between a Heerlen XI and a Liege XI

Heerlen totalled a massive 276 for 5 after its allotted number of overs. Despite a positive start by our neighbours from Liege, they eventually crashed to 160 all out.
01.04.07 No joke
The clocks have changed, the sun is shining and it’s the first of
April. That can only mean one thing: cricket. On Thursday 5 April we
will be holding our first outdoor training of the 2007 season.
On Sunday 15 April an internal Twenty20 game has been scheduled and our
first friendly game of the season has been pencilled in for Sunday 22
April at PSV Tegenbosch in Eindhoven. The league season starts in
earnest on Saturday 5 May. And don’t forget, this year we’re playing in
Belgium!
In order to take maximum advantage of the light, next Thursday’s
training is planned to start at 5.30 p.m. If you can’t make it that
early just turn up whenever. For those of you who don’t know where we
train/play, please consult the information page.
10.03.07 Wakey wakey!
Okay, we've not had much of a winter here in Holland, but with all
the major Test nations preparing for the World Cup which starts in the
Carribean in three days' time, there's been plenty of cricket to follow
these past few months. For Heerlen Cricket Club too, it's slowly time
to come out of hibernation. Time to check out your kitbag and maybe
order some gear for the new season which starts in just over 4 weeks...
The last indoor training is due to take place on Friday 16 March at
7.30 p.m. (Sintermeertencollege, Heerlen).
The provisional fixture list has been made known for the 2007 season.
For those of you not yet in the know, we have joined the Belgian League
this season (see archived items 2006). This has meant that there
are fewer league fixtures, but there is still plenty of scope for
arranging friendly match this summer. Any other clubs who want to give
us a game should get in touch with the Match Secretary.
An informal meeting is being planned for later this month and members
will be receiving an email confirming the date, time and venue in due
course. Be patient: the secretary has just installed a new computer and
still has to solve the mystery of the missing email addresses.
08.01.07 Welcome to 2007
A Happy New Year to all our readers!
Your next diary date is indoor training on Friday 19 January at 7.30
p.m. (Sintermeertencollege, Heerlen). We look forward to seeing you.
